Curbside Recycling

Provo City's current recycling contract will be ending soon and the City has been evaluating several options. Public Works Director David Decker showed Council Members the estimated costs of continuing with Republic Services or switching to handling recycling pickup in-house, as well as options for changing to a weekly pickup schedule.

Decker recommended that Provo take over recycling pickups and potentially switch to a weekly schedule. Estimates show a cost savings and an improvement in customer service since the City would be directly responsible for services. Citizens have already expressed their support for weekly pickups since they are often confused by the biweekly schedule. The funding request will be presented at the May 5 Council Meeting.

In the Work Session

Joint Meeting with the Parks and Recreation Board:
The Council met with the Parks and Recreation Board to discuss user fees, capital improvement projects, and the recreation, arts and parks tax. Regularly holding joint meetings with key boards and commissions is something Council Members felt would be helpful for discussing items of mutual interest.

Curbside Recycling:
Several options are being considered as Provo City's contract with Republic Service for curbside recycling services is nearing its end. The Public Works Department is recommending that recycling be handled in-house rather than renewing the contract with Republic. Costs for various options were presented in addition to a recommendation to switch from biweekly to a weekly pickup schedule. This will be presented to the Council again once more details have been determined.

Shake It Up

April 16, 2015, has been designated as the Great Utah Shake Out Day of Action. More than just an
earthquake drill, the Shake Out gives organizations, businesses, and individuals an opportunity to plan and practice for emergencies of all types and sizes. Provo City will be conducting some drills to get our departments ready but you don't have to do anything big to be involved. Visit the Shake Out website to see ideas for activities - developing/practicing a communications plan, holding emergency training, check on household preparedness, set up a phone/text tree, etc.

Whether you decide to do a large-scale activity or just take a five-minute break under your desk when the siren sounds, we hope you'll be part if this important event.

In the Work Session

Budget:
The Mayor and City administration reported on some upcoming items for the FY2015-16 budget. Budget details are still being worked on and the FY2015-16 budget will be formally presented to the Council at the May 5 meeting.

Council Budget Committee:
Council Members discussed the Council Budget Committee recommendation for guiding principles on user fees as well as Council Budget Intent Statements. They approved a motion to further review the information over the next two weeks and provide input at the April 21 Work Session. The role and focus of the Budget Committee moving forward was also discussed. The Committee has a list of priorities to work from but will focus first on the idea of a Recreation, Arts, and Parks (RAP) tax.
